Usually at this time of the year, the "experts" have a solidified a "favorite" to win the NCAA tournament. Typically, two or three teams have separated themselves from the pack as February wraps up. This year, however, is quite a different story.
I am here to tell you that this year, there is not any team that has solidified that number one overall seed. In fact, I believe there are eleven, thats right, ELEVEN teams that are still battling for the four number one seeds. Indiana, Duke, Miami, Florida, Gonzaga, Syracuse, Georgetown, Michigan, Michigan State, Kansas and Louisville all legitimately have a shot to be a top seed. As the Big Ten teams continue to beat each other up in the top conference in the land, teams like Gonzaga, Florida and Kansas have easier schedules which should put them in as a top seed as long as they roll in the last couple weeks of the season. Let's quickly compare Kansas and Indiana. Kansas opponents still include: @ISU, WVU, TTU, @BU while Indiana still has: @Minn, Iowa, OSU, @Mich. Indiana will unlikely finish the regular season with four straight wins while Kansas will be favored in all of their remaining four games.
After comparing the eleven teams that have a shot to be a number one seed, it is clear to me that this March should be one for the ages. The disparity of college basketball teams this year has been incredible, even without the likes of powerhouses North Carolina and Kentucky in the top 25. Although this year there may not be one great team, there surely are many very good teams which will set up a GREAT postseason.
